Ōgonryū katana sword: design and finishes
The name Ōgonryū evokes the mystical power of the golden dragon, a legendary creature from Japanese mythology that embodies wisdom, prosperity, and divine protection. In Japanese tradition, the golden dragon symbolizes the heavenly emperor.
Its T10 steel blade features a steel and rust finish that evokes the natural patina of time, while the genuine hamon notare, achieved through differential tempering, creates irregular waves along the cutting edge. The bo-hi lightens the structure while producing the characteristic whistling sound during movement. The round golden tsuba features a dragon coiled in a perfect circular composition, symbolizing eternity and the cosmic cycle. The handle combines white stingray skin (samegawa) and wood, wrapped in brown braiding (tsuka-ito) in a diamond pattern that ensures a firm and elegant grip. The menuki represent golden dragons emerging from beneath the braiding, while the engraved golden alloy fuchi and kashira complete the decorative harmony. The hammered brass habaki fits perfectly into the yellow lacquered wooden scabbard, adorned with a dragon fresco that unfurls along its entire length. The brown sageo braids the connection between the wearer and their weapon.
