Ōgonryū katana sword: design and finishes
The name Ōgonryū evokes the mystical power of the golden dragon, a legendary creature from Japanese mythology that embodies wisdom, prosperity, and divine protection. In Japanese tradition, the golden dragon symbolizes the heavenly emperor.
Its T10 steel blade features a steel and rust finish that evokes the natural patina of time, while the genuine hamon notare, achieved through differential tempering, creates irregular waves along the cutting edge. The bo-hi lightens the structure while producing the characteristic whistling sound during movement. The round golden tsuba features a dragon coiled in a perfect circular composition, symbolizing eternity and the cosmic cycle. The handle combines white stingray skin (samegawa) and wood, wrapped in brown braiding (tsuka-ito) in a diamond pattern that ensures a firm and elegant grip. The menuki represent golden dragons emerging from beneath the braiding, while the engraved golden alloy fuchi and kashira complete the decorative harmony.
