How To Replace A Katana's Fuchi And Kashira?

How to replace a katana’s Fuchi and Kashira?

Do you have a katana and want to change the Fuchi and matching Kashira? Replacing the Fuchi and Kashira on your katana not only allows you to restore your katana sword, but also to customize it. However, this uncomplicated operation requires care and precision. Here’s a detailed guide to help you replace these components yourself, while ensuring the safety and integrity of your katana.

Replacing the Fuchi and Kashira on a katana requires a few specific tools. Here are the steps to follow to perform this operation safely:

Step 1: Preparation and equipment

Before you begin, make sure you have the necessary tools:

  • Maru-dō (wooden hammer),
  • Punch or similar tool for removing pins (Mekugi),
  • Soft cloth to protect parts and clean,
  • Flat tool to remove the Kashira if necessary.

Step 2: Removing the Tsuka (handle)

  • Secure the blade: Work in a safe environment to avoid injury. Protect the katana blade by covering it with a soft cloth.
  • Remove the Mekugi(s): Using the awl, gently push the bamboo pins that hold the blade in the Tsuka. Be careful not to damage the pins or the handle.
  • Separate the blade from the handle: Once the pins have been removed, pull the blade tang out of the Tsuka. Do this carefully to avoid damaging the blade or other components.

Step 3: Removing the old Fuchi and Kashira

  • Removing the Fuchi: Once the Tsuka has been removed, the Fuchi, located at the base of the handle, can be removed. If necessary, gently use a flat tool to lift it off without damaging the wood or other components.
  • Removing the Kashira: The Kashira is located at the end of the Tsuka. It can be removed by sliding it off, or using a flat tool if necessary. Take care to avoid cracking the wood of the handle.

Step 4: Installing the new Fuchi and Kashira

  • Fit the new Fuchi: Slide the new Fuchi onto the base of the Tsuka. Make sure it fits perfectly and is aligned with the tsuba guard.
  • Fit the new Kashira: Slide the new Kashira onto the end of the Tsuka, making sure it’s secure. Check that it’s securely in place and aligned with the Fuchi.
  • Check adjustments: Make sure all parts are correctly positioned before reassembling the katana. Parts must be securely fastened to prevent movement during use.

Step 5: Reassembling the katana

  • Replace the blade in the Tsuka: Gently insert the blade into the Tsuka, ensuring that everything is correctly aligned with the new components.
  • Re-insert the Mekugi pins: Replace the bamboo pins that secure the blade to the handle. Make sure they are securely in place, holding the blade firmly in place.
  • Check sturdiness: Test the handle’s sturdiness and make sure the Fuchi and Kashira are securely in place. Check that everything is secure and that the katana is ready for use.

Step 6: Finishes

After installing the new Fuchi and Kashira, clean the entire blade and steel parts with a soft cloth to remove any fingerprints or dust. This will ensure the longevity and good keeping of your katana. By following these steps, you’ll be able to replace your katana’s Fuchi and Kashira safely, while preserving the integrity and aesthetics of your weapon. Whether you’re a martial arts enthusiast or practitioner, proper katana care and precise fitting are essential to keep your katana in top condition.
