Shima katana sword: design and finishes
The Shima katana sword (縞), which means “stripes” in Japanese, immediately brings to mind the distinctive patterns of the zebra, a symbol of duality and balance in nature.
Its T10 steel blade reveals its natural beauty through a genuine gunome midare hamon, obtained through traditional differential tempering. This undulating temper line is a testament to the ancestral craftsmanship of Japanese blacksmiths and gives the blade its exceptional properties. The round black alloy guard (tsuba) features engraved designs that create a subtle play of light and shadow. The handle (tsuka) combines a white imitation stingray skin base with black diamond-patterned braiding (tsuka-ito). The menuki represent a black dragon, a symbol of power and wisdom. The scabbard (saya) is the most striking element with its black and white lacquered zebra pattern, enhanced by black kojiri and koiguchi elements that unify the whole. The black sageo completes the ensemble with elegance.
