Murasakihana katana sword: design and finishes
The name “Murasakihana” evokes the fleeting beauty of purple flowers blooming in the Japanese spring. This name symbolizes nobility and elegance, as the color purple traditionally represents imperial rank and spirituality in Japanese culture.
The T10 steel blade reveals a magnificent gunome midare hamon obtained through differential tempering, creating irregular undulations that dance along the cutting edge like crystalline waves. The bo-hi carved into the steel lightens the blade while producing a distinctive resonance during movement. The round brushed copper tsuba features delicate floral engravings that echo the katana’s name, while the carved copper habaki ensures a perfect fit in the scabbard. The handle combines the rough texture of black faux stingray skin with black tsuka-ito braiding in a diamond pattern, adorned with menuki representing copper dragons. The copper kashira engraved with flowers harmoniously completes the ensemble. The purple lacquered wooden scabbard captures the very essence of this katana’s name, creating a striking contrast with the black sageo.
