Kōryūka katana sword: design and finishes
The Kōryūka (紅龍華) katana sword evokes the splendor of the scarlet dragon, a symbol of power and nobility in Japanese tradition. This name combines “Kō” (紅) meaning scarlet red, ‘Ryū’ (龍) for dragon, and “Ka” (華) representing floral magnificence. This katana thus embodies the fusion between the raw power of the legendary dragon and the refined elegance of the cherry blossom, creating a perfect harmony between power and beauty.
Its Damascus steel blade reveals undulating patterns reminiscent of the scales of the mythical dragon, while the bo-hi lightens the structure and produces a characteristic whistling sound when moved. The round tsuba in gilded brass features a detailed engraving of a dragon’s head, eternal guardian of the blade. The handle combines red stingray skin with black diamond-patterned braiding (tsuka-ito), creating a striking contrast that ensures a firm and comfortable grip. The gold menuki represent miniature dragons, while the brushed copper fuchi and kashira add a noble finish. The black and red lacquered wooden scabbard (saya), decorated with white zebra stripes, evokes the dancing flames around the dragon, complemented by a discreet black sageo.
